Knowledge Base & Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about features, sync, and security.

How Your Privacy Is ProtectedBecause our apps are 100% local-first, your master password never leaves your device. We don't store accounts, passwords, or recovery keys on any server—which means only you hold the key to unlock your encrypted data.

When you set a master password in myjournl or Kaanban, the application uses the high-memory Argon2id key-derivation function to generate a 256-bit AES encryption key. This key is used in-memory to encrypt your SQLite database and confidential fields before saving to local disk.

Why We Cannot Reset Passwords:

  • No Cloud Database: There is no central server storing your credentials or password hashes.
  • Zero-Knowledge Architecture: Your data is protected by industry-standard encryption executed strictly on your hardware.
  • True Data Ownership: We deliberately engineered our apps so that no third party—not even Omnient—can access or unlock your personal records.

What you should do if you lose your password:

Check if you exported a sovereign .myjournl or .kaanban backup archive with an earlier password, or verify whether you saved your 24-word emergency recovery phrase during vault setup.

Omnient apps feature a direct Peer-to-Peer Local Network Sync Engine. Instead of uploading your notes or boards to AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, your devices pair directly across your local Wi-Fi subnet.

Step 1mDNS DiscoveryDevices discover each other securely on your local subnet.
Step 2QR / PIN HandshakeOne-time visual QR scan exchanges ephemeral TLS certificates.
Step 3Delta SyncEncrypted change records transfer directly over high-speed LAN.

Troubleshooting Wi-Fi Sync Issues:

1. Check AP / Client Isolation on Router

Guest Wi-Fi networks usually block peer-to-peer communication. Ensure both devices are connected to your primary home/office Wi-Fi network with Client Isolation turned OFF.

2. iOS & macOS "Local Network" Permission

On iOS, navigate to Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network and ensure the toggle for myjournl or Kaanban is switched ON.

3. VPN or Firewall Software

Corporate VPNs or strict endpoint firewalls (e.g., Little Snitch) may block local port binding. Temporarily bypass local LAN traffic in your VPN settings.

Because Omnient applications store all records locally, you have total sovereignty over your backup archives. You can export full encrypted archives at any time:

myjournl Backup Steps
  1. Open myjournl > Click Settings (Gear Icon).
  2. Select Backups & Export > Click Create Encrypted Backup.
  3. Set an optional archive password or use your master key.
  4. Save the resulting .myjournl file.
  5. On your new device, open myjournl > Import Backup with Smart Merge.
Kaanban Backup Steps
  1. Open Kaanban > Open Board Menu.
  2. Select Export Board Archive (.kaanban) or Export Full Workspace.
  3. Save the encrypted JSON/SQLite archive payload.
  4. Transfer via AirDrop, local drive, or secure private folder.
  5. On target device, select Import Board Archive.
Tip for Cloud Backup Users:You can safely store exported .myjournl and .kaanban files in your personal iCloud Drive, Dropbox, or Google Drive, because they are already AES-256 encrypted prior to leaving your machine.

Our Privacy-First Support Model

Zero-Knowledge Troubleshooting Without Accessing Your Private Notes or Keys

Zero Remote Databases

Omnient maintains zero central server databases for our local apps. We cannot look up your email or inspect your entries because no central records exist.

Sanitized Error Logs

Diagnostic reports contain only anonymized stack traces and OS build numbers. Private credentials, journal text, and card titles are never serialized into logs.

Human-to-Human Engineers

When you email support, you interact with engineers who will walk you through client-side recovery steps rather than relying on dangerous remote override scripts.

Still need technical assistance?

Send our engineering team a sanitized support inquiry. We respond within 24 hours.
